The Great Western Woodlands Collaboration is seeking a single, integrated regional management approach, driven by stakeholders, to provide the most efficient and effective management for the woodlands as a whole.
This process was accelerated in 2009 with the creation by the WA government of a Great Western Woodlands Stakeholder Reference Group. This Ministerially invited group was convened from broad interests in the area, included representation from mining, pastoral and tourism sectors, local and State government, Traditional Owners and conservation groups. The GWW Collaboration were formally represented in the Reference Group by The Wilderness Society and Gondwana Link. This group met three times, and contributed to the production of a Biodiversity and Cultural Conservation Strategy, since released by the Department of Environment & Conservation.
The Government has committed $3.8 million to the development and initial implementation of the strategy over the next three years to better manage and protect this important wilderness area. The government has committed to re-convening the Great Western Woodlands Reference Group for ongoing consultation with respect to the area and to advice on implementation of the strategy.
Separate from the Ministerially invited Reference Group, The Woodlands Initiative is a community group convened for broader community involvement.
Many of the people from the Reference Group are now active in the Initiative.
You can be represented on this group through a relevant organisation or group such as your local shire, a Conservation group, an Industry group such as Pastoral and Graziers Association (PGA), Australian Prospectors and Leaseholders Association (APLA), Association of Mining & Exploration Companies (AMEC) or a relevant Native Title representative group.
Ask us which groups are participating, or contact your relevant representative body in regard to the Woodlands Initiative to be involved.
